Mobile Office Suggestions

My dream has always been to have freedom of travel and still be able to take care of business. Freedom of travel means something different to each individual. For me, it means being able to be in a remote locations and still carry on business as usual. Obviously the type of business that you are in is a key factor in being able to accomplish this goal. So depending on your line of work, today's technology can easily allow you to do your business from virtually any location.

When complete, this section will have my personal experiences regarding what works in the field...and what doesn't. I have specific criteria when purchasing technology related equipment and will add a section on what to look for when purchasing equipment for "extreme" mobile use. I will also comment equipment for general camping and specifically airplane camping.

As shown below, no place is sacred when it comes to getting the job done.
I do not have a traditional work day or working hours, as I have never been able to enjoy my work when constrained to a specific schedule. I believe that enjoying our work is very important since it consumes a great deal of our daily lives. With no form of AC power available, I use a variety of batteries and solar panels. When powering the laptop, I find that an AC inverter connected to a powerful battery does a better job than simply using a 12V power adapter.

A note regarding printers and flying. I found the Canon i70 portable color printer to be the perfect choice for lightweight portability. However, if transporting this (or any other printer) in an unpressurized airplane, I suggest that you remove the color cartridge before climbing above 10,000 feet and place it in a ziplock baggy. I have been told that below 10,000 feet, a mayonnaise jar will keep the ink from oozing out, however I haven't personally tried it...yet.

During thunderstorms, I prefer to sit under the wing instead of hiding in the tent or other shelter. Weather is such an incredible phenomena that avoiding it, as opposed to enjoying it, makes little sense to me.

More tips coming soon!!!
